Understanding the need for Cybersecurity training and compliance

Robert Hodges March 19, 2009

I saw a great article today on Baseline about the need for organizations to deal to with corporate governance, Information Security and Privacy, identity theft, and the ever-growing number of laws and regulations.

While most organizations are required by law or contracts to have internal controls supporting the privacy of sensitive information, these are issues which everyone must consider. Betty Steele points out that any organization outsourcing business process with personal information is most likely required by laws, regulations, and/or contracts to exercise oversight prior to and during engagement with service providers. And these requirements are growing rapidly.

According to Ms Steele, there are several key factors behind this growth. She discusses each of these points and recommends ways to help an organization reduce compliance costs and potentially optimize its use of information technology.

President Obama orders a Cybersecurity review

Robert Hodges February 11, 2009

President Barack Obama directed his security advisers this month to conduct a review of the governments ‘cybersecurity’ programs, plans, and activities.
This interagency review is expected to develop a framework that will ensure future cybersecurity efforts are integrated and coordinated with both Congress and the private sector.

With a 60-day deadline, Melissa Hathaway, the new acting director for cyberspace for the National Security and Homeland Security Councils, will be leading the review. She has previously served under the Director of National Intelligence and played a key roll in coordinating the current Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative.

According to James Jones, Obama’s national security adviser, the National Security Council (NSC) will be placing a higher priority on cybersecurity than on their capacity to combat the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Pro-active Electronic Discovery Compliance (E-Discovery)

Robert Hodges January 12, 2009

Make sure you are prepared for E-Discovery before a lawsuit is filed. A great article by Jennifer Spencer (Baseline) highlights the need for a well-organized records management program.

Federal laws require that organizations produce all paper and electronic documents and data for trial, and the court can inflict sanctions if relevant documents have not been preserved or produced in discovery. E-Discovery can be carried out on a network, via the web, or from a physical computer and includes text, images, audio files, calendar files, databases, spreadsheets, animation, computer programs, and websites. Malware (including viruses, spyware, adware, and Trojans) can be secured and investigated as well. E-mail is especially valuable as users tend to be less careful in what information they disclose than they are with hard copy correspondence.
